What If Your Eyesight Could Get Better?
We all know vision can get worse. But, what if it could get better?
Hello. My name is Carl Vigilante. Welcome to my blog, “Let’s Relearn To See!”
I invite you to open your mind to the possibility that your vision can improve. If that idea is new to you, know that it’s natural to be skeptical, feel unsure, or even afraid of the unknown. But also know, it’s natural to feel enthusiastic and want to explore it! So, if you have the courage and desire, let’s explore.
Open your mind. Open your eyes. Take a few deep breaths. Gently blink a few times, and look around effortlessly for the many interesting details you might see, and exciting nuggets of possibility you might find, and read on.

What if your eyesight could get better?
Vision fluctuates
I was just listening to the second episode of the Better Eyesight Podcast, with host Nathan Oxenfeld (a Bates method teacher) and his guest Greg Marsh (my Bates method teacher). Together they read and discussed the August 1919 issue of the Better Eyesight Magazine of William H. Bates. And here’s what they had to say about fluctuating vision:
Nathan: “One of the biggest initial insights I had about this whole Bates topic and Natural Vision is that vision is a fluid phenomenon and not a static phenomenon. After wearing glasses and contacts for over a decade, I was really in that mindset of thinking my vision was very static. Because, that’s kind of what glasses do to us. They kind of stabilize the vision, and make it seem like its never changing.”
Greg: “Or, Bates would say, ‘They stabilize the strain.”
Nathan: “Exactly. Yeah.”
Greg: “They, like calibrate the strain.
Nathan: “Uh huh.”
Greg: “And just leave it right there.”
Nathan: “Exactly, yeah, keep that tension there, in order for those glasses to work. I remember, when I started taking my glasses off and really tuning into more of the fluidity of my vision, it was kind of mind-blowing to see how much it could change. Not just in to what I was use to, in like, my vision was getting worse and worse over the years, but, it was speeding up. My vision was fluctuating on a weekly and daily basis, and like an hourly basis. Ya know, it was different when I woke up, compared to after I had breakfast, compared to afternoon, compared to the evening. And, I think that’s an important part of the process for people to experience, is just seeing how their vision changes. And, you know, isn’t that one of Bates’s arguments, is like, if your vision can get worse, it can also get better?”
Greg: “I’ll say in introductory classes that I do, or like just a free class, there’ll be a whole array of different people, and I’ll ask,
‘How many people notice that some days your vision is better than other days?’ And like one hand will go up.
And then I’ll ask, ‘Well, how many of you notice that some days your vision is worse than other days?‘ And like everybody’s hand will go up.
And then I’ll go, ‘Do you realize I just asked the same question twice?’
“Everybody thinks their vision can get worse, but nobody thinks their vision can get better. Even though, they’re the same thing. It’s the same curve you’re just going up and down it.”

“Everybody thinks their vision can get worse, but nobody thinks their vision can get better. Even though, they’re the same thing. It’s the same curve, you’re just going up and down it.”
– Greg Marsh
Vision is not static, it fluctuates.
It gets worse. And, it gets better.
Ponder that for a moment . . .
What if your eyesight could get better?
Twenty years ago, when I was introduced to the Bates Method of Natural Vision Improvement through the book, “Relearning To See: Improve Your Eyesight Naturally!“ by Thomas R. Quackenbush, I asked myself that same question, “What if my eyesight could get better?”
I was an avid . . . listener
For many years I had been having trouble reading, and struggled with blurry vision, fatigue, headaches, nausea, eye pain and sunlight sensitivity. but I just couldn’t get use to glasses, and resorted to listening to audio books. Hundreds of them.
What if my eyesight could get better?
Rather blindly, I had accepted the consensus, that eyesight can only get worse. Then, upon learning about the Bates method, I asked myself, as did ophthalmologist William H. Bates over a hundred years ago, “What if the consensus is mistaken? And the general agreement is wrong? What if eyesight can improve? Furthermore, what if I could improve mine, see clearly and read comfortably again?”
I became an avid . . . reader
Well, apparently, the consensus (of opinion) was, and still is, quite mistaken. Because in fact, my eyesight did improve, as did the eyesight of Dr. Bates, who’s issue was also with reading.
I was surprised
When I first learned that eyesight could get better, I was completely surprised. I had never questioned as to whether it could or couldn’t. I had never heard of such a thing. For no one ever mentioned it, not even my eye doctors. So, I had assumed the worst. In truth, I had been pretty darn gullible. And, my eyesight suffered for it.
But, although I was surprised, I was more enthusiastic than doubtful. Although I didn’t understand it, I was very curious, interested and excited about the possibility!

I was curious. Interested. Excited!
I really wanted to learn how to improve my eyesight!
That was twenty years ago. And today…
I have a vision…
that we all realize…

our eyesight can improve!
What if your eyesight could get better?
I suggest it can!
What is my blog, “Let’s Relearn to See!” about?
Returning to having normal eyesight through Natural Vision Improvement.
Regaining our Natural Vision, and using our eyes effortlessly, the way nature intended.
Exploring this natural way of seeing and getting to the root of our vision problems, which according to Dr. William H. Bates, M.D., and Nature herself, is mental and physical strain.
Trusting and letting go of the habits of strain that interfere with normal vision, and allowing seeing to happen in a relaxed and effortless way.
Finding ways of waking up our Natural Vision by fostering, coaxing, relearning and reestablishing natural vision habits.
And realizing that normal vision happens automatically, when we let go of trying to see.

My blog, “Let’s Relearn To See!” is about exploring together anything and everything to do with letting go of strain and waking up our naturally relaxed, normal and clear vision.

What Is Natural Vision?
When we are seeing clearly, we are not trying to see. Instead, we are relaxed and allowing seeing to happen…

“The eye with normal sight never tries to see.”
– William H. Bates, M.D.

What’s My Story?
29 years ago, my close vision got blurry. I didn’t know I could improve it, only correct it with glasses, which I found unbearable.
Then, 20 years ago, I discovered the Bates Method of Natural Vision Improvement, which started my amazing journey to improving it.

Nature gives us the opportunity to relearn to see clearly, by using our eyes in a relaxed and effortless way.
So… what if your eyesight could get better?
Let’s explore the possibility!
